What is Eucalyptus?
It is a member of the plant family Myrtaceae, which is a fast-growing evergreen Australasian tree.
Eucalyptus oil; the extracted form that has wide uses and medical applications, is distilled from the leaf of Eucalyptus.
After the oil has been extracted, it must be diluted before it can be used as medicine. It is colorless to pale yellow liquid with a fresh odor.
Health benefits of Eucalyptus oil:
It is a widely used oil for wound healing, dental care and muscle pain reliever.
One of its main uses is for respiratory system problems such as; asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, cold and cough.
Eucalyptus oil as an expectorant:
The active substances of eucalyptus oil act as an expectorant and have a relaxing effect on the muscles of the respiratory system.
Its constituents irritate the nasal mucosa facilitating the removal of nasal discharge together with harmful dusts, thus restoring the integrity of the respiratory tract and at the same time facilitating breathing and ventilation.
How to use eucalyptus at home?
- It can be used as tea, ready made from tea bags filled with the leaves.
- Aromatherapy; By Adding few drops of eucalyptus oil to a steam bowl to relieve nasal congestion and work as an expectorant.
- For relaxation: Hang the leaves in shower or add them to a bath with hot water to get a spa-like experience.
- Topically can be used as muscle pain reliever and bug repellent.
